This research line aims to critically reflect on emerging and central themes of contemporary capitalism, considering public policies and socio-spatial inequalities within the context of Brazilian capitalist development.

Spatial Scales, Territory, and Power

It examines, through various analytical levels and spatial scales, the main transformations of contemporary capitalism, the accumulation of power and wealth by certain agents, and the chain of decisions that shape social space.

State, Rescaling, Statehood, and Governmental Capacities

This line analyzes the processes of spatial rescaling of the Brazilian state, the creation of new forms of statehood, and their territorial implications.

Infrastructure, Development, and Territory

The goal is to adapt and refine the theoretical and methodological framework related to the role of infrastructure in the debate on regional and urban development and planning. It also seeks to provide guidance for the formulation and implementation of territorially oriented public policies. It analyzes the provision of infrastructure and collective services, their interrelations with development strategies, and the agents who produce and consume space, aiming to promote emancipatory infrastructures.

Marketization, Neoliberalization, and Territory

This research line analyzes the construction of markets within the context of neoliberalization and financialization, seeking to reflect on counter-hegemonic possibilities for the formation of more hybrid and plural markets, in contrast to neoliberal capitalist markets.

Federalism and Public Policies

It analyzes theoretical approaches and historical experiences of federalism to understand the political and economic aspects of Brazilian federalism. It also examines the consequences of state rescaling for the federal pact, conditions for cooperation, federal disputes, and implications for the definition of public policies, from localism to governance.
