Paula Miranda’s Research Proposal Examination, 26 October, at 10 a.m.
On Monday, 26 October, at 10 a.m., Paula Menezes Salles de Miranda will present her qualifying examination at PPGPUR/IPPUR/UFRJ, based on her research entitled “The Construction of Markets for National Park Concessions in Brazil”, supervised by Deborah Werner.
The research examines the neoliberalization of nature through service concessions in Brazilian national parks. It focuses on the construction of markets for the management of these areas and the public and private actors involved in this process. The incorporation of market mechanisms into protected area management involves both the transfer to the private sector of services previously provided by the state and the development of new economic activities related to visitation and tourism. The study adopts a qualitative, multiscalar approach, beginning with the international context, moving to the national configuration of concession policies, and culminating in an empirical study of Jericoacoara National Park.
The preliminary findings indicate that granting concessions for services in national parks involves more than transferring activities to private companies. This process entails the construction of institutional arrangements, legal instruments, business models, and forms of participation that constitute markets for the management of these areas, increasingly linking nature conservation with tourism.
The examination committee comprises Rosangela Marina Luft (PPGPUR/UFRJ), Fabio Lucas Pimentel de Oliveira (PPGPUR/UFRJ), and Sidnei Raimundo (USP).
The examination is open to the public and will take place remotely.
