Article: Carlos Brandão – GeoUSP
In the article titled “Social Construction of a Variety of Markets: Income Capitalization and Platform Capitalism”, published in the journal Revista GeoUSP Tempo e Espaço, Carlos Brandão* seeks to weave together questions from a broad agenda of reflections to advance the construction of some of the main theoretical and historical mediations for a better understanding of the expansive and contradictory dynamics of capitalism. He highlights the role of money, platforms, and the social construction of markets in the current context. The article discusses how the relationship between money and markets can foster an approach that aligns with the perspective of platform capitalism as a geo-historical context for economic activities, calculations, and exchanges mediated by digital devices and technologies. Lastly, it argues that there are other varied and polymorphic markets in the concrete reality of everyday life, far beyond capitalist markets, which may serve as a promising horizon for insurgent and emancipatory actions.
